Two males charged over siege in Warrawong

Two males will appear in court after they were charged following a siege at Warrawong overnight, NSW Police say.

About 9.15pm on Friday 9 June 2017, police were called to Churchill Avenue following reports of people attempting to enter the premises through the roof.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command attended and located two males in the roof cavity of the premises.

Upon the arrival of the officers the two males forced their way onto the roof and started to throw roof tiles at the attending police.

A significant number of police resources were called to the location including general duties, criminal investigation, proactive crime team, rescue unit, dog unit and highway patrol.

Following a lengthy operation shortly after 4am today, police negotiators were able to affect the arrest of the two males after they climbed from the roof.

A large amount of damage was occasioned to the building and surrounding premises that were struck by the tiles thrown from the roof.

The males were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with use weapon to avoid apprehension, destroy property, assault police (x 4) and several outstanding warrants.

The 16-year-old male was refused bail to appear at a Children’s Bail Court today.

The 18-year-old man was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Bail Court tomorrow.
