Two men and a woman arrested after assaulting Good Samaritan and police in Newcastle

Three people have been arrested after allegedly assaulting a Good Samaritan and a police officer in Newcastle this morning, NSW Police say.

About 12.35am tomorrow, a 29-year-old man was sitting in a parked car on Beaumont Street, Hamilton, with a 32-year-old female passenger.

The man allegedly assaulted the woman a number of times, when a witness in the street went to intervene. Police will allege the pair assaulted the witness, a 28-year-old man.

A second witness contacted police and officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command attended and located the couple, with a third man, 20, nearby.

The 20-year-old man allegedly punched a police officer a number of times in the head, and all three resisted arrest.

The older man was taken to John Hunter Hospital as a precaution and remains there under police guard. It is anticipated legal action will be taken against the man on his release from hospital.

The younger man and the woman were taken to Newcastle Police Station, where the man was charged with two counts of resist police, affray and larceny. Both men are expected to appear in Newcastle Local Court on 8 December 2016.

The woman was issued a future court attendance notice for resist/hinder police and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Her court date is being determined.
