Two men arrested over shooting at Newcastle, NSW

Two men have been arrested in relation to the shooting of another man in a home near Newcastle yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 1.45am yesterday, emergency services called to a home unit on Newcastle Road, Jesmond, where they found a 27-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his left thigh and left hand.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment. He remains in a serious but stable condition.

Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic officers.

During an extensive search of the area, detectives located a shortened single-barrel shotgun, and a stolen Holden Commodore.

Further inquiries revealed the stolen vehicle was linked to an investigation into armed robberies in the area under Strike Force Shirley.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad and Newcastle City Local Area Command conducted numerous inquiries.

As a result of their inquiries, investigators, with the assistance of the Tactical Operations Unit, executed a search warrant at a home on Rudd Street, Lambton, about 5.50pm.

Two men – aged 20 and 24 – were arrested at the location and taken to Maitland Police Station.

The 24 year-old man was charged with discharge firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possess prohibited firearm, and steal motor vehicle.

He was refused bail to appear at Maitland Local Court today.

The 20-year-old man was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment for a health condition. He is expected to be released into police custody later today.

Strike Force Shirley was established by detectives from the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad and Port Stephens, Central Hunter, and Lake Macquarie Local Area Commands, to investigate a series of armed robberies in the area.

Investigations are continuing.

Police are urging anyone with information that may assist Strike Force Shirley investigators to call Crime Stoppers.
