Two men have been charged over the alleged attempted murder of a man and the alleged kidnapping of another in northern NSW last month, NSW Police say.
About 7.30pm on Sunday 23 July 2017, a motorist travelling on Kyogle Road, Kunghur – near Uki, noticed a spot fire and injured man on the side of the road.
The 35-year-old man, who had significant burns, was treated at the scene by the motorist and a local doctor before being airlifted to Royal Brisbane Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
Police from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command attended the scene and located a burnt out white Holden Commodore utility, which was seized for forensic examination.
Strike Force Photic was established by detectives from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command, assisted by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, to investigate the incident.
As part of their inquiries, strike force investigators identified another man, aged 36, who was reportedly with the injured man that night, when they were kidnapped by a group of men and placed in the back of a white ute.
The 36-year-old man was injured after jumping from the moving ute, but managed to escape by hiding in nearby bushland.
Following extensive inquiries, a 29-year-old man was arrested about 7pm on Wednesday (2 August 2017), and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station.
He was charged with attempted murder and kidnapping (special aggravated).
He was refused bail and appeared at Tweed Heads Local Court, where he was formally refused bail to appear at the same court on Wednesday 23 August 2017.
About 12.30pm yesterday, a 28-year-old man was arrested at Tweed Heads Police Station, where he was charged with attempted murder and kidnapping (special aggravated).
He was refused bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court today.
Investigations are continuing and further arrests are expected.
Police are urging anyone with information that may assist Strike Force Photic investigators to call Crime Stoppers.
