Located midway between Latin America and Africa in the South Atlantic, Ascension Island is a vital strategic asset which plays a critical role in the UK's defence and security policy. The co-location of UK and American facilities means that the island also plays an important role in the special relationship with the USA. The South Atlantic relay station enables the BBC World Service to reach millions of listeners across West Africa and beyond. The UK Government has an important role in helping protect the pristine natural and globally important habitats on and around Ascension.
Collaborating with the Ascension Island Government, the FCDO and the MOD will work with partners to identify opportunities for greater coordination to align UKG investments in defence, infrastructure, people, sustainability and environment.
The Ascension Island Government, FCDO, MOD and other UK partners will jointly progress projects within the four main objectives to secure the long-term sustainability of Ascension.
The four main objectives are:
OBJECTIVE 1: DEFENCE OPERATIONS AND SECURITY
To support UK and US Defence operations and provide a platform ready for future capabilities. To maintain Ascension Island's role in supporting access to the Falkland Islands.
OBJECTIVE 2: RESILIENT INFRASTRUCTURE
To work with the Ascension Island Government to jointly plan, complete and sustain high priority infrastructure projects as a part of a coherent plan to invest in the island's critical infrastructure so that it is cost effective and resilient for the long term. The partners will work together to ensure Ascension becomes an exemplar of sustainability by using the newest technologies and practices.
OBJECTIVE 3: SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENT
Working with the Ascension Island Government to establish sustainability as a key driver of Ascension, running on renewable energy for the long term, and protecting the island's natural environment. Working with all of the organisations on the island to minimise the impact on the environment of the island and its surrounding marine protected area.
OBJECTIVE 4: COMMUNITY
To maintain Ascension Island as a healthy, safe, secure and productive working community focussed on delivering the core missions.
