The United Kingdom would like to thank Mr Obokata, the Special Rapporteur, for his thorough report which focuses on the links between displacement and contemporary forms of slavery. The UK government will continue to work in collaboration with his office to support international efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 8.7.
The UK recognises the complex interconnectedness between contemporary forms of slavery and other humanitarian and development issues. We agree with the Special Rapporteur that a comprehensive approach is required to reduce the vulnerability of displaced people to contemporary forms of slavery. This will include education and vocational training, access to legal and formal work and measures to improve access to justice.
The report rightly highlights the need for the international community to come together purposefully to improve systems of protection for the most vulnerable in our societies, while ensuring safe and orderly migration flows.
