Unconscious man pulled from ocean in Newcastle

A man has been pulled unconscious from the ocean at Newcastle today and remains unconscious in hospital, NSW Police say.

About 10.20am today (Thursday 11 January 2018) a 67-year-old man was standing on a sandbar, about 20 metres offshore, at Dixon Park Beach.

A short time later lifeguards assisted the man from the water after he was seen to be floating face down.

The man was pulled from the water and attempts to resuscitate him commenced.

Ambulance paramedics conveyed the man to the John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command attended the man’s home at Mereweather and conveyed his wife to hospital.

The man remains in hospital in the intensive care ward.
