Union to fight for 'every cent' of RCR workers' entitlements

The Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union (AMWU) is organising workers affected by the collapse of engineering group RCR Tomlinson – and is vowing to fight for 'every cent' of their entitlements.

RCR Tomlinson fell into administration last week after it was revealed that it was unable to pay off its substantial debts. RCR workers are currently contracted at Eraring and Liddell power stations, the Newcastle Coal Loader and a workshop in Bennett's Green.

Despite the company's financial situation – RCR Tomlinson's employees have been turning up to work to fulfil those contracts.

Workers haven't been receiving superannuation since October 20. They may also have been working for up to 15 days without pay. Workers have told the union they are distressed about not being paid in the lead up to Christmas.

Workers who are owed unpaid wages and entitlements will be listed as creditors at the first meeting with administrators next Monday. The AMWU is asking workers to list the union as its proxy to demand full compensation for the work they have done.

"We will be presenting a letter demanding backpay and a guarantee of payment for ongoing work," said AMWU Assistant Secretary Cory Wright. "We want workers paid before the banks get their cut."

"Our message to RCR Workers is this: we understand that it will be a difficult time, but we will look after you throughout this process," Mr Wright said.
