University fire at Townsville

Police are investigating after a large fire broke out in a residential building at a Townsville university overnight.

Emergency services were called to the campus on Angus Smith Drive just before 1am following reports of a blaze at one of the accommodation blocks.

Two residential buildings were evacuated and the fire was quickly extinguished.

No one was injured in the blaze which has caused moderate damage to the building.

Police are now working to establish an evacuation centre to house around 220 students who have been displaced as a result.

Forensic officers will examine the scene at first light.

The cause of the blaze at this stage is unknown.
