Unlicensed driver in court after pursuit in Newcastle

An unlicensed driver driving a stolen car is due in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow charged after a police pursuit, NSW Police say.

Police from Newcastle City Traffic and Highway Patrol were conducting stationary speed enforcement duties on Thomas Street, Wallsend, about 11.15am earlier today (Tuesday 23 January 2018), when they saw a hatchback allegedly travelling at 112km/h in a 70km/h zone.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle; however, will allege the driver accelerated and a pursuit was initiated.

Checks revealed the hatchback had been reported stolen, as well as being a vehicle of interest in several reports of dangerous driving.

The driver was followed west along Thomas Street and Minimi Road, then north along Cameron Street; it was last seen travelling towards Birmingham Gardens.

About midday police found the vehicle in Davis Avenue, Wallsend.

A 23-year-old man was arrested after a foot pursuit to Mordue Parade, Jesmond.

The man was taken to Waratah Police Station where checks revealed he was unlicensed.

The man, from Belmont, has been charged with four offences:

• Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous

• Exceed speed by more than 30km/h

• Never licensed person drive vehicle on road, and,

• Drive conveyance taken without consent of owner.

The man was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow (Wednesday 24 January 2018).
