This morning, the Security Council will convene on the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals.
The 15-nation organ will be briefed by Graciela Gatti Santana, President of the Mechanism, and Serge Brammertz, its Chief Prosecutor.
The Mechanism is mandated to perform several essential functions previously carried out by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, which closed in 2015 and 2017, respectively.
The Council created the Mechanism on 22 December 2010, and it began operating on 1 July 2012 in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, and on 1 July 2013 in The Hague, Netherlands. The former branch inherited functions relating to Rwanda, and the latter those concerning the former Yugoslavia.
While the Mechanism operated in parallel with these two tribunals initially, following their closure it continued as a stand-alone institution.
