Update on cyber investigation 15 April

Madeleine Ogilvie, Minister for Science and Technology

The Tasmanian Government is continuing to investigate the theft of data from third-party file transfer service, GoAnywhere MFT.

Minister for Science and Technology, Madeleine Ogilvie, said that there is no evidence that any further data has been released.

"Whilst this is good news, we ask affected Tasmanians to continue to remain vigilant, and stay alert for any suspicious activity," Minister Ogilvie said.

"To date, 16,000 stolen documents have been released by the hackers. I can confirm that approximately 150,000 individuals and businesses who have been directly affected by the cyber incident have now been contacted directly by the Department for Education, Children and Young People either via email or post.

"The department has also proactively reached out by phone to those identified as vulnerable to ensure they have the supports in place.

"Through extensive investigations by our cyber team, we have now identified approximately 14,000 additional individuals whose data may have been compromised.

"Out of an abundance of caution, those identified will be contacted today.

"As a result of these precautionary measures, this may mean that some people receive multiple notifications and we are sorry if that has caused any confusion. However, it is important that we cover all bases to ensure we provide as much information as possible.

"We continue to closely monitor the situation, and we have prepared for the possibility of further data releases so that we can act immediately with a particular focus on communicating directly with affected individuals.

"We continue to urge people to stay alert for any suspicious financial activity or attempted scams, and a dedicated webpage has been created to assist with enquiries and information.

"A dedicated hotline has also been stood up on 1800 567 567 between 9am–6pm to provide Tasmanians with advice and support, should they need it.

"We have also engaged the services of IDCare, Australia's national identity and cyber support service and we are establishing other specialist support."

There are a number of resources and support services that Tasmanians can access in relation to data security and financial crime.
