Busting graffiti and creating a gallery of murals
If you happen to walk past a new mural in your local neighbourhood, you might have spotted one of the 5 murals installed in Boroondara as part of the recent Urban Canvas Mural Festival.
The Urban Canvas Mural Festival involved 30 artists producing large-scale murals on some of Inner-South Melbourne's most graffiti-prone areas during the final two weeks of April. Each mural represents the theme of Belong/Nugal (a Woi Wurrung translation - pronounced 'Naar-Gaw').

The 5 locations in Boroondara, identified as graffiti hotspots, where murals have been created are:

- Hawthorn Station, Burwood Road railway bridge, Hawthorn - artist: Angharad Neal-Williams
- Lynch Street substation wall, Hawthorn - artist: Ling
- Underpass wall at Myrtle Road, Canterbury - artist: Yan Yan Candy Ng
- Underpass wall at Canterbury Road, Canterbury - artist Justine McAllister
About the festival
Boroondara is part of the Inner South Metro Mayors Forum (ISMMF), alongside the cities of Bayside, Glen Eira, Kingston, Port Phillip and Stonnington. Through this forum, the 6 inner-city council partners were invited to participate in the mural festival to deter unsightly illegal graffiti by commissioning a series of vibrant street art murals on public spaces.
The festival was funded by the Victorian Government's Community Support Fund, which aims to prevent graffiti vandalism by installing unique street art. The idea is that taggers are less likely to deface public spaces featuring street art.
