The ACCC notes with extreme sadness the passing of Professor Maureen Brunt AO.
Professor Brunt was one of Australia’s most influential competition economists and academics, and was instrumental to the development of our competition policy and law framework.
Professor Brunt contributed enormously through her research, academic writings, and her teaching of competition principles to law and economic students and practitioners at Monash University.
As a member of the Trade Practices Tribunal, Professor Brunt also made major contributions to a number of its most significant judgments. Many of these judgments remain relevant to competition lawyers today, including the landmark Queensland Cooperative Milling Association (QCMA) decision.
"We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Professor Brunt’s passing and offer our condolences to her family, friends and colleagues from across the competition law and economics communities," ACCC Chair Rod Sims said.
"Professor Brunt was always keen to improve the operation and efficient implementation of competition law and she played a pivotal role in shaping Australia’s modern competition policy and law. Her legacy will be felt for generations to come."
