Barton Oval No.1 at Belmont has been closed following a Friday night vandalism attack that caused an estimated $10,000 worth of damage.
Vehicles were driven across the playing surface, leaving deep tyre marks and rendering the field unsafe for use.
Lake Macquarie City Council's City Works Manager Matt Brogan said the incident was deeply disappointing.
"The most disappointing part about this type of vandalism is that the fields are used by local clubs, including juniors, and it's these user groups who are most hurt by these actions," Mr Brogan said.
The damage follows similar incidents elsewhere across the city, including at Kahibah Oval last month.
In that incident, vandals on e-bikes caused up to $3000 in damage after tearing up the playing surface.
Council is encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
"If you saw or heard anything suspicious in the area on Friday night, please report it to police," Mr Brogan said.
"This year's community sport competitions have already been heavily affected by unfavourable weather conditions. This incident represents another setback for the many volunteers and staff who work tirelessly to get boys and girls, men and women onto the field each weekend."
Reports can be made to the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
