Victoria Is Car Crime Capital Of Australia

Liberal Party Victoria

One to two cars are stolen every hour in Victoria, with a massive 59 percent increase in insurance claims for car theft over the past 12 months.

Car thefts have cost Victorians $220 million over the past year. While car theft explodes across Victoria, it is falling in every other state.

A significant portion of thefts are linked to youth offenders, with police reporting that stolen cars are being used for joyriding, ram raids, and other serious crimes.

Opposition Leader, Brad Battin, said: "The stark contrast between Victoria and the rest of the country is the result of the Allan Labor Government's soft on crime approach.

"This isn't just about stolen cars, it's about families being traumatised and feeling unsafe in their own homes because the government is failing to protect communities with tougher laws and better enforcement."

Shadow Minister for Police, David Southwick, said: "We need tougher penalties to get repeat offenders off the streets, real consequences for youth gangs who think car theft is a game, and a simple message that if you break bail, you face jail.

"What we are seeing is the consequences of Labor cutting nearly $50 million from the police budget, closing or reducing the operating hours of 41 police stations and allowing frontline numbers to fall short by more than 2,000."

The unprecedented levels of car theft comes off the back of alarming Australian Bureau of Statistics data showing Victoria is now also the most lawless state in Australia.

Victorians face daily risks, with increases of up to 58 per cent in the number of victims in eight out of 16 major crime categories-including kidnapping and abduction, motor vehicle theft, armed robbery, and retail crime.

Crime is out of control and the Allan Labor Government is out of answers.

The Liberals and Nationals' will introduce 'Break Bail, Face Jail' ensuring there are real consequences for repeat offenders, get more police onto our streets and make our community safer.
