View Historic Hawkesbury Newspapers Online

Step back in time and see what was making the local news thanks to Hawkesbury Library Service.

Collaborating with the National Library of Australia, Hawkesbury Library has scanned and digitised issues of local newspapers and made them available online for free, via digital platform Trove.

Trove is Australia's popular online cultural and research portal, bringing together content from various institutions and organisations around Australia. It provides a single entry point to a treasure trove of national voices and stories with free access to over 6.5 billion documents and records from Australia's recent and distant past.

The Windsor and Richmond Gazette, later called the Hawkesbury Gazette, is the most recognisable newspaper from this region. For a number of years, the public has been able to view the Hawkesbury newspapers from the 1800s on Trove. This has recently been extended from the 1960s to 1971. This period covers events within 'living memory', including the major floods of 1961 and 1964; Hawkesbury's involvement in the Vietnam War, the 1970 Royal Visit to the Hawkesbury by Queen Elizabeth II, and the opening of the Windsor Swimming Centre in 1971.

The Library has previously digitised the following local Hawkesbury newspapers: Windsor, Richmond and Hawkesbury Advertiser covering 1873-1899; Hawkesbury Advocate 1899-1900; Hawkesbury Chronicle 1881-1888; Hawkesbury Courier 1844-1846; Hawkesbury Herald 1902-1945 and Windsor Express 1843–1844.

As well as newspapers, Trove has photographs, maps, books, reports and more, allowing interested persons to easily search and access material online https://trove.nla.gov.au/ free-of-charge.
