Work will begin on Tuesday 22 July on dismantling a viewing platform affected by coastal erosion at Blacksmiths Beach.

The platform, off Maneela Street, has been closed since last week when successive storm events led to the loss of a significant amount of sand about 700m north of the surf club.

Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Assets Karen Partington said the erosion had started to undermine the viewing platform, prompting its closure for safety reasons.

"Our engineers inspected the site on Friday and due to the extent of erosion we've unfortunately made the decision to remove the platform completely," she said.

Crews will dismantle the structure and place it into storage while Council investigates an alternative location nearby.

"The platform remains largely intact, so we will hopefully be able to relocate it in the near future without too much additional work," Ms Partington said.

In the meantime, another accessible lookout is available approximately 800m south at Blacksmiths Beach, in front of the Swansea Belmont Surf Life Saving Club, off Gommera Street.

The platform's removal is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
