Volunteer Spotlight - John Waller - East Gippsland

For more than five decades, John Waller has been quietly helping make Paynesville a stronger, more connected community.

John has dedicated 52 years to the Paynesville Lions Club and more than two decades to Legacy Australia, continuing a family connection that began with his father, a returned serviceman involved with Legacy.

"My father was in Legacy as a returned serviceman, helping widows and children of deceased war veterans," John said.

For John, volunteering has always been about community, friendship and giving something back.

"You feel as though you're doing something for the community," he said. "I get a lot of satisfaction out of it. I've met a lot of great friends over the years."

From running the monthly Paynesville market to community barbecues and local events, John says volunteering has created lifelong friendships and a strong sense of camaraderie.

"We have a lot of fun here in Paynesville. We're a good, friendly bunch here."

Despite the recognition, John is humble about his contribution, saying volunteers rarely seek praise for what they do.

"I'm very honoured. You don't look for recognition in these things," he said.

He is also quick to acknowledge the work of other volunteer groups across East Gippsland, including CFA members and emergency service volunteers who dedicate their time helping others.

John's extraordinary contribution has been recognised through his inclusion on the East Gippsland Volunteer Honour Roll.

John hopes his story encourages more people to get involved in their local community - especially this week - Australia's National Volunteer Week.

"Every small town needs volunteers," he said. "Join a club, join a volunteer group, join the Paynesville Lions Club - just help your community."
