Queensland is home to more than 700,000 active volunteers, each playing their part in making the state’s thriving communities more resilient and vibrant places to live.
Today (5 December) is International Volunteer Day, an opportunity for Queenslanders to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution of the state’s hardworking volunteers.
Acting Minister for Communities Shannon Fentiman paid tribute to the hard work and dedication of Queensland volunteers.
"The theme for this year’s International Volunteer Day is ‘Volunteers build resilient communities’, Ms Fentiman said.
"In particular it’s about putting a spotlight on local community volunteers who contribute to making their communities more resilient against natural disasters and economic stresses.
"We know Queensland’s volunteers are there to help when times get tough, especially during times of natural disasters.
"In the last two weeks we have seen this first hand, through the amazing work volunteers continue to do in supporting Queensland affected by the bushfires.
"I would encourage Queenslanders to thank the tireless volunteers in their community for their hard work and contribution to making our state a better place."
Volunteering Queensland CEO Mara Basanovic said the theme Volunteers build Resilient Communities was very relevant to Queensland at this time.
"Volunteering Queensland proudly acknowledges and thanks all volunteers who generously contribute to making their communities more resilient and better places to live," she said.
"We especially shine the light on our Queensland and interstate disaster management volunteers and the superhuman effort they are putting in to protect our communities from the fires.
"They are extraordinary heroes and heroines who deserve our grateful thanks, appreciation and support at this unprecedented time."
