Volunteers needed for bushfire recovery

Eurobodalla Council is seeking volunteers interested in making a difference to the lives of people significantly impacted by the bushfires.

The Council is running a new program offering social support and companionship to socially-isolated bushfire-affected residents to help them reconnect.

Eurobodalla Council's volunteer development officer for bushfire recovery, Maxine Plant, said the support of family, friends and neighbours was fundamental for good mental health and connection, however not everyone had that existing support network.

"Social activities can be low on the priority list when you're focussed on your own and your property's recovery," she said.

"COVID too has added another dimension of social isolation to the mix.

"This program provides a little extra support to those who aren't quite up to doing new things on their own – like trying new experiences – or who would just like to see a friendly face on a regular basis.

"We've already had interest from prospective clients – now we need volunteers willing to offer companionship to enhance local people's quality of life."

Volunteers must be over 18, have a few hours of time to give each week, and be willing to attend a free mental health first aid training course. Specialist training may also be available.

The first orientation session is planned for Friday 6 August.
