In a massive boost for Northern Tasmania, a re-elected Tasmanian Liberal Government will support the bid of a Tasmania JackJumpers team in the WNBL.
If the license is awarded to Tasmania, the new team will play the majority of its games in the North and North West at both the Silverdome and the new Devonport Stadium.
Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, said the WNBL team would only be possible with continued investments in upgrading the Silverdome and the Devonport Oval Sports Complex, which will increase capacity and accessibility while delivering higher-quality amenities for patrons.
"Tasmania is incredibly proud of the JackJumpers and what they have achieved after only four years in the NBL, and our investments into sporting facilities in the North and North West will pave the way for their proposed expansion into the WNBL," the Premier said.
"We know sport has the power to bring people together and foster state pride, which the JackJumpers have already achieved in spades in a short amount of time.
"We thank the JackJumpers for their outstanding work in helping progress an application for a WNBL team, which will also create a comparable basketball pathway for women in the State.
"Both basketball and women's sport continue to grow strongly in Tasmania, and a re-elected Liberal Government is committed to seeing this continue, with Tasmanians to benefit as a result."
