NSW Police are warning about a scam which is targeting businesses and individuals submitting tenders online to the state government, NSW Police say.
The Department of Finance, Services and Innovation warns that a scam email purports to come from ‘NSW Procurement Service’ and incorporates a "plausible" – but fake – sender email address.
The email seeks confidential login details of those inquiring about government tenders.
Commander of the State Crime Command’s Fraud and Cybercrime Squad, Detective Superintendent Arthur Katsogiannis, said business owners and operators, as well as individuals, should always be wary of unsolicited emails.
"Those who receive such emails are advised not to click on the link in the email, but should delete the email immediately; do not call the phone numbered listed in the document," Det Supt Katsogiannis said.
"If you want to check the legitimacy or otherwise of the email, do your own independent check to find out a phone number yourself and call the department or unit directly.
"These scammers will continue to come up with innovative ways to scam innocent victims; however, our messages continue to remain – if in doubt, delete and report it to police.
"In some cases, scammers are not actually seeking people to transfer funds, but instead are asking for login details to the NSW eTendering website.
"If you have a feeling you have been scammed, inform police and the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN)," Det Supt Katsogiannis said.
