Wheelchair stolen at Federation Square

Police are hoping to identify a man after a wheelchair was stolen and a man was left stranded in a toilet at Federation Square in Melbourne this morning, Victoria Police say.

Police have been told an unknown man struck up a conversation with a 54-year-old man, who uses a wheelchair, at Flinders Street railway station about 11am.

The pair then attended a toilet on Birrarung Marr and the offender assisted the man to the toilet before stealing his electric wheelchair.

The St Albans man was stranded in the toilet for about an hour when a passer-by came to his aid.

The offender was last seen travelling east in the wheelchair towards Batman Avenue.

The electric wheelchair is maroon and has a dark coloured canopy with a number of shopping bags attached to it.

The offender is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, aged 20 to 24-years-old.

He was wearing a Santa hat, black jumper, camouflage pants and white runners.

Investigators have released images of a man they believe can assist with their enquiries.

Anyone with information or who may recognise the man is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
