Wimmera farmers send truck loads of hay to NSW

Wimmera farmers are rallying to donate hay to parts of Australia devastated by drought and fire, and the effort continues to grow.

Bungalally farmer Daniel Mibus and neighbour Sam McGennisken have created a staging area near their Green Lake properties, where up to 15 trucks will leave for New South Wales over the coming weeks to deliver much-needed fodder.

It's all part of a not-for-profit initiative called Burrumbuttock Hay Runners, which sees farmers donate and transport hay to their drought affected colleagues across Australia.

Mr Mibus expects more than 6000 bales to come in and out of the stack site before the three-week effort is finished.

In anticipation of high numbers of trucks at the site, Horsham Rural City Council has this week supplied gravel and graded the access roads.

"If we had 20mm over rain and the road wasn't upgraded, basically we'd be stuck here. All of this hay would not get to New South Wales," Mr Mibus said.

"The work that Council has done to build up the roads has been excellent," he said.

Mr Mibus said farmers still wanting to donate fodder could contact him on 0437 728 205.

"Burrumbuttock Hay Runners is also seeking monetary donations to cover the fuel cost of driving from Horsham to Burrumbuttock in NSW," he said.

Mr Mibus said the hay that is delivered not only provides critical relief but shows fellow Australian's doing it tough that someone cares about them.

"We had a good year here and we know that the fodder we have on hand is required up there much more than we need it down here," he said.

"In times of crisis, it's good to give back."
