Police are appealing for public information following an incident where a number premises were evacuated on Russell Street in the Melbourne CBD last night, Victoria Police say.
Safety checks were conducted by police about in relation to an item about 5.40pm last night.
An area was blocked between Lonsdale and Little Lonsdale Street and people were evacuated from surrounding businesses as a precaution.
The Bomb Response Unit attended and the area was deemed safe around 12am this morning.
Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad are investigating and appealing for anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area last night to come forward.
Police also wish to thank those in the area for their cooperation last night.
