Wollongong Film Fest Rescreens in Warrawong, Shellharbour

Get ready for two nights of inspiring local cinema celebrating community, creativity, and storytelling. Wollongong City Council with Screen Illawarra and Shellharbour City Council are proud to present the rescreening of the Creative Wollongong Short Film Festival.

This free indoor event brings a vibrant collection of short films back to the big screen, each one created by emerging and professional Illawarra filmmakers and originally premiered at last year's lakeside launch.

Join us at Gala Cinema Warrawong on Wednesday 4 June , followed by a second repeat screening at the accessible Shellharbour Civic Centre on Thursday 5 June . Both events run from 5.30pm to 7.30pm AEST, with doors opening from 5pm.

In partnership with Screen Illawarra, Bus Stop Films, Coequal, and the NSW Government, the festival is part of an ongoing effort to support local creatives and share their stories with the wider community. It shines a light on our unique region, particularly highlighting Lake Illawarra, a hidden and underrated gem of the NSW South Coast.

"Celebrating our unique region and community, that's what this festival is all about," said Acting Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Linda Campbell.

"It's a chance to see our region's storytelling talent come to life in a way that's entertaining, inspiring, and deeply local."

Featured films include some of the winners of the 2024 Creative Wollongong Short Film Competition:

  • Dear Ocean, I Love You by Tamia Herrera and Maika Shiine James (Ages 12–24)
  • The Crown by Elkie Chadwick (Ages 25+)
  • Bait by Beau Ritchie (Ages 12–24)

In addition, audiences will enjoy special commissioned works shot at Lake Illawarra and in partnership with Screen Illawarra and Bus Stop Films. The short film The Secret Waterhole, written by Elias Rees and directed by Phillip Crawford from Coequal will also be part of the line up.

Over which was part of Screen Illawarra's 'pitched' films line up, and one of six films created specifically for the Creative Wollongong Short Film Competition, won Best Australian Comedy at Flickerfest in February.

Written and directed by Duncan Ragg and Anna Phillips, and filmed around Lake Illawarra with local cast and crew, the story follows a boy with a disability who steals his dad's boat and refuses to return until his dad promises to save the world. Supported by Screen Illawarra and Bus Stop Films, the film showcases our region's talent and spirit and will hopefully inspire more local creators to share their unique stories.

Whether you're a film lover, a proud local, or simply looking for a great night out, don't miss this exciting celebration of Illawarra's creative talent, right here on the big screen.
