Woman charged after baby consumes 'ice', NSW

A woman will face court today charged over alleged child exposure and drug offences in the Illawarra earlier this year, NSW Police say.

On Monday 25 January 2016, police from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command were contacted after a 21-month-old boy, who had been admitted to Wollongong Hospital suffering seizures, tested positive to having consumed methylamphetamine or ‘ice’.

Police were told the boy had slept alone in his mother’s room the previous evening, where it was possible he had access to prohibited drugs.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse Squad commenced an investigation, executing a search at the boy’s home.

Officers located and seized methylamphetamine, cannabis, cathinone, buprenorphine and drug paraphernalia.

Following an extensive investigation, a 27-year-old woman was issued a Future Court Attendance Notice to appear at Port Kembla Local Court tomorrow.

The Koonawarra woman was charged with abandon/expose child under seven, cause danger of death; and six counts of possess prohibited drug.

The young boy is in the care of NSW Department of Family and Community Services.

The Child Abuse Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate crimes against children, including sexual assault, physical abuse and serious cases of neglect.
