Woman dies in crash near Wagga Wagga 12 June

Police remain at the scene of a fatal crash in the Riverina region today.

Just before 12.30pm (Saturday 12 June 2021), emergency services responded to the Sturt Highway at Yarragundry, 15 kms west of Wagga Wagga, after reports a Holden Astra and a Mitsubishi Triton collided head-on.

The utility towing a caravan, flipped and caught alight.

Upon arrival, officers from Riverina Police District found the Holden driver trapped. The woman was treated until the arrival of paramedics; however, died at the scene. She is yet to be formally identified.

The Mitsubishi driver, a 41-year-old man, escaped the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames and destroyed. He was taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and also underwent mandatory testing.

A crime scene was established and will be examined by specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit.

The Sturt Highway remains closed in both directions with local traffic diversions in place.
