Woman missing after house destroyed by fire north of Merimbula, NSW

A woman is missing after a house was destroyed by fire on the Far South Coast this morning, NSW Police say.

Emergency services were called to the home on Sapphire Coast Drive, Tura Beach, about 10km north of Merimbula, at 12.30am (Monday 25 December 2017), after a man woke to find smoke filling his bedroom.

He told police from Far South Coast Local Area Command that the couple who lived there were still inside.

Two officers entered the burning building and found a 67-year-old man on the floor and helped him to safety; however, the intensity of the fire prevented them from searching further.

Fire-fighters attended a short time later and brought the fire under control.

A crime scene has been established and specialist fire investigators are now en route to the town.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and inquiries are continuing.

The 67-year-old man has been taken to the South East Regional Hospital.

A thorough search of the scene will be conducted at first light.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
