Woman threatened with knife, man charged in Morisset

Police have charged a man after he allegedly held a knife to the back of an elderly woman in Morisset today, NSW Police say.

About 2.20pm (Thursday 23 November 2017), a 46-year-old man entered a supermarket in Morisset and allegedly purchased a knife.

As he was leaving the shopping centre he approached a 75-year-old woman and held the knife to her back.

Members of the public alerted a police officer who had walked into the shopping centre and she quickly approached the man and drew her firearm calling on the man to drop the knife.

He allegedly refused and the officer commenced negotiations with him.

Further police arrived with one officer drawing his Taser.

Police will allege the man let the woman go but continued waving the knife while attempting to leave the mall.

He was tasered by police causing him to fall to the ground where officers quickly moved in to make the arrest.

He was taken to Toronto Police Station where he was assessed by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment to an injury to his head.

He was later released and returned to Toronto Police Station where he was charged with armed with intent, use weapon to avoid apprehension, wield knife in public place, affray and common assault.

He was refused bail and will appear in Toronto Local Court tomorrow (Friday 24 November 2017).
