Women, kids and seniors score with new projects

A $1 million reconstruction of netball and tennis courts at JJ Clancy Reserve, lighting upgrade at Kings Park and Wallan Tennis Complex, seniors' outdoor fitness equipment and new goals for soccer and Australian Rules are on the scorecard thanks to State Government support.

Two netball courts and two dual purpose netball/tennis courts with lighting will be reconstructed at JJ Clancy Reserve thanks to $500,000 through Sport and Recreation Victoria's Female Friendly Facilities Fund and a $500,000 Council contribution.

JJ Clancy Reserve is the sport and recreation hub of Kilmore and home to nearly all of Kilmore's junior sport. This funding will help increase sustainable opportunities for women and girls in sport and physical activity.

In the past two years, JJ Clancy Reserve has seen significant improvements including the rebuilding of four synthetic grass tennis courts and new lighting over eight courts, competition standard lighting for the main oval, and just last month a $3.8 million makeover was announced which includes an integrated community facility, new play space and the relocation of the little athletics field facilities.

A $250,000 grant from Sport and Recreation Victoria's Community Sports Lighting Fund is a shining light for Seymour's Kings Park main oval and the Wallan Tennis Complex. Council will also contribute $217,000 to these lighting projects.

Seymour Football Netball Club, Seymour Junior Football Netball Club, Eastern Hill Cricket Club and Seymour Little Athletics will benefit from a lighting upgrade at Kings Park Main Oval. This project will give these clubs the opportunity for night events, most notably the female football teams.

The Wallan Tennis Complex has six courts that are used for coaching, training, mid-week competition and Saturday competition. Out of the six courts only four are lit and can accommodate evening and night use. This funding will see lighting installed on the two unlit courts which will help meet the demand for night competition and training.

Mitchell's senior residents are also big winners with exercise parks featuring fitness equipment specifically designed for seniors to be installed at three locations - Chittick Park in Seymour, the Elms Reserve in Kilmore and Beveridge Recreation Reserve.

The fitness stations will support not only older residents' physical health, but their wellbeing, independence and sense of social and community connectedness.

This project will be made possible through $200,000 funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria's new Facilities for Active Seniors Fund and $100,000 from Council.

Scoring goals should become a little easier at Broadford Sports Precinct with new Australian Rules football goalposts and two sets of senior soccer goals on the way thanks to $8000 from Sport and Recreation Victoria's Scoreboards and Fixed Equipment Fund and an $8000 Council contribution. The precinct's sportsgrounds are part of Broadford Secondary College, and these improvements will also be a huge benefit to students at the school.

The precinct has received significant investment in recent years, particularly to improve opportunities for soccer and football in Mitchell, including a major pitch upgrade, new player interchange area, installation of competition standard sports lighting and previously a new pavilion. There projects were made possible with funding assistance from Sport and Recreation Victoria and the Department of Education Training.
