Corangamite Shire families, parents and caregivers are invited to an online workshop that will help support families with their children's learning.

'Telling your story: Supporting your child's language and literacy' will be held on Wednesday 28 April, from 8-9 pm.

Presenter Catharine Hydon has a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education and extensive experience in the early childhood sector.

She started out as a kindergarten teacher in Melbourne and has had lead roles in a range of services and projects for children and their families.

Sue Currell, Team Leader Education & Care said speaking, listening, reading and writing skills were vital for children to build healthy relationships and communicate their needs.

"Being able to use language is one of the most important ways children can express who they are and what they think about their world," Ms Currell said.

"Language skills help children explore ideas and make positive contributions to their community.

"From birth, children benefit from the support of the adults around them to build the skills they need to be effective communicators.

"This practical session will share what we know about how children become literate and how we, as the critical adults in children lives, support children as they learn language skills so they can tell their own story."

The session is aimed at caregivers of children aged from birth to six years old.
