Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones has today launched a world-first climbing experience on the Story Bridge.
Ms Jones said Brisbane's iconic Story Bridge is ready to take bookings for two new thrill seeker activities, which are set to launch this month (January 2020).
The company that operates the bridge walks, XBrisbane, will be offering the Walk the Plank and Cantilever adventure experiences to bridge walkers who are looking for additional thrills.
Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said these were the first of up to eight additional new attractions to be offered at our famous Story bridge.
"New experiences will grow our tourism industry and create local jobs. These new attractions will position the Story Bridge as Australia number one bridge adventure precinct," she said.
Today's announcement comes after the Palaszczuk Government confirmed funding through it's $36 million Growing Tourism Infrastructure fund to support new attractions on the Story Bridge in 2019.
Ms Jones said the new attractions at the Story Bridge would attract an extra 45,800 tourists a year an generate an extra $3 million for local businesses.
"The Sydney Harbour Bridge is tired and old – their offering hasn't changed in decades. This major upgrade will make sure the Story Bridge is front-of-mind for thrill seekers throughout the world."
XBrisbane principal John Sharpe said the Walk the Plank was a one metre plank that offered guests a heart stopping chance to walk out over the traffic 40 metres below. He said the Cantilever would allow climbers to experience that weightless feeling of falling, while being totally safe in a harness and suspension safety system.
"These adventure activities are not for the faint-hearted, but any true Queenslander will want to give it a crack," he said.
Mr Sharpe said the cost for the new activities would be $40 for each activity or $50 for both, in addition to the Bridge Climb fee, starting from $129.
