Wuri Rise For Resilience: Bayside

Bayside Council's Australia Day program includes a special 6am Wuri Rise sunrise ceremony at Grand Parade, Ramsgate Beach, Cook Park - a moving and respectful gathering that honours the survival, strength and living culture of Australia's First Nations peoples.

All residents are welcome to attend the Wuri Rise ceremony on Sunday 26 January, which will include a heartfelt Welcome to Country, a traditional smoking ceremony to cleanse and protect, and a flag raising to mark unity and respect.

Wuri Rise is designed to honour resilience and create an inclusive, culturally safe space that supports the social and emotional wellbeing of First Nations people. Recognising that this day can bring feelings of isolation, exclusion, sadness and grief for many, the ceremony seeks to create connection, hope and healing through culture, storytelling and community.

The ceremony will deepen understanding and demonstrate respect, value and recognition for First Nations cultures, histories, knowledge and rights, offering opportunities for cultural learning, quiet reflection and meaningful participation.

It will encourage broad community attendance and promote the message: "Reflect. Respect. Celebrate. We're all part of the story." By fostering shared experiences and open conversations, Wuri Rise helps build genuine, respectful relationships between the wider community and First Nations peoples, while honouring culture, history and future generations.

By listening and learning together, we can all support reconciliation and help build a stronger, united Australia.

Council beaches are not patrolled by lifesavers and the calm water can be deceptive. Please follow water safety procedures when swimming, stay within the netted areas, and keep a close watch on children and inexperienced swimmers. Please dispose of rubbish in the bins provided and help us keep our beautiful foreshore clean.
