The Geographical Names Board is seeking community feedback on a proposal by the City of Parramatta Council to name a reserve located between Calool and Midson Roads in the suburbs of Beecroft and Carlingford as Burawa Reserve.

Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood said Burawa was a Dharug word meaning above or upwards, to look up or move upwards.

"Through place naming, communities have the opportunity to unlock past stories, preserve traditions, reawaken language and provide a sense of belonging and identity," Mrs Underwood said.

"In this bushland area your eyes are attracted upwards to view the grandeur of the tall native trees. The reserve is around 2.5 hectares of Blue Gum High Forest and Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest which are critically endangered Ecological Communities."

Mrs Underwood said the Board encouraged community comment before it considers the proposal.

"We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name," Mrs Underwood said.

Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website: www.GNB.nsw.gov.au

Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.

The closing date for submissions is 20 January 2023.
