The Geographical Names Board is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Waverley Council to officially name a reserve located at the end of Cadigal Place, North Bondi as Warren Zines Reserve.

Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood said the Board encouraged community comment before it considered the proposal to officially assign the name to the reserve which includes a memorial to Warren Zines.

"The Board acknowledges the reserve has been unofficially called Warren Zines Reserve for more than 20 years and the changing of long-established names can cause confusion and disruption," Mrs Underwood said.

"All submissions received will be considered by the Board before a decision is made."

The reserve is located on the south-western corner of the site of the former Dover Heights Bowling Club. The reserve has unofficially been called Warren Zines Reserve since the late 90s.

Changes to place names are discouraged unless the change has been deemed to be in the public interest or for safety reasons. Changing well established names can lead to address or location confusion, especially to electronic navigation services.

Warren Zines was a local resident and long-time member of the Dover Heights Bowling Club. He attended the 15th Maccabiah in Israel in 1997 and was one of four people killed when a bridge collapsed. Mr Zines was representing Australia in Lawn Bowls when he passed.

The Board is seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name Warren Zines Reserve. Suggestions for alternative names are not being sought at this time.

Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website: www.GNB.nsw.gov.au

Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.

The closing date for submissions is 9 December 2022.
