Youth arrested following siege, NSW

A 17-year-old male has been arrested following a siege at Barrack Heights earlier today, NSW Police say.

Police from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command were called to a home on Gasnier Road about 1.40pm following reports of a male acting suspicious in a rear yard.

On arrival officers were directed to a neighbouring address where police attempted to speak with the young person who had climbed into the roof cavity of the home. Police identified that this young person was wanted for a number of serious offences.

While speaking with the male he removed a number of roof tiles and climbed out onto the roof of the house.

It’s alleged the man threw numerous tiles at police while they attempted to speak with him and made a number of threats of self harm.

Police Negotiators were called to assist and they commenced communication with the youth.

About 3.40pm, he voluntarily surrendered to police.

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he is expected to be charged.

No police were seriously hurt during the incident however a number of Police vehicles were damaged as a result of tiles thrown by the young person.
