The Finocchiaro CLP Government has announced $12.5 million in works to kickstart the Territory's recovery from widespread flooding during this year's unprecedented wet season.
Under the CLP Government's new $100 million Flood Recovery Fund, $12.5 million of new projects will focus on improving the Territory's flood resilience through better infrastructure, while a Roads Repair Package is being fast-tracked by the Department of Logistics and Infrastructure and set to be announced next week.
As part of the first phase from the Flood Recovery Fund, $500,000 will go towards developing a Future Plan to relocate the remote town of Daly River/Nauiyu to higher ground, as well as flood mitigation works in Katherine and Alice Springs.
Phase 1 of the Flood Recovery Fund includes:
$2.5 million for Early warning IT solutions Territory wide$500,000 for a Daly River/Nauiyu Future Plan$4 million for Katherine North levee and drainage works$600,000 for Jawoyn Association for the design of Maud Creek Bridge upgrades$4.9 million for Alice Springs Flood Mitigation immediate works
The Minister responsible for the Flood Recovery Fund, and Member for Katherine, Jo Hersey, said the Flood Recovery Fund forms part of the Government's broader plan to rebuild stronger and more resilient infrastructure after one of the most significant weather events in the Territory's history.
"The $100 million fund is designed not only to repair damage but to strengthen infrastructure against future extreme weather events", Minister Hersey said.
"This first phase will support flood mitigation works in Katherine and Alice Springs and strengthen early warning capabilities across the Territory.
"Importantly, the phase will also begin the process of relocating the remote town of Daly River/Nauiyu to higher ground, with $500,000 for a Future Plan to engage with the community on its long-term future.
"Our Government remains committed to helping our communities recover from these unprecedented weather events and ensure they are better protected, better connected and better prepared for the future.
"As part of the next phases of the fund, we are investigating significant improvements to the Southern levee in Katherine."
Future phases under the $100 million Flood Recovery Fund will focus on long-term resilience, including building back better roads, bridges and flood mitigation infrastructure.
The Government will also work closely with remote communities to deliver culturally appropriate recovery centres and cyclone shelters on higher ground, reducing the need for large-scale evacuations during future disasters.
