16-year-old driver injured in Shortland crash

A teenage driver is under police guard in hospital, following a single-vehicle crash at Shortland this morning.

Shortly after midnight (Thursday 9 May 2019), officers from Newcastle City Police District were patrolling Sandgate Road when they saw a silver Toyota Camry allegedly travelling at high speed.

Police activated their lights to stop the driver; however, the car left the road, hit a kerb and hit a tree.

At no stage was a pursuit initiated.

The 16-year-old driver freed himself from the vehicle and was checked at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital.

He remains there under police guard in a stable condition.
