200,000 Bill-Cutting Batteries Installed in 6 Months

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

The Albanese Government's Cheaper Home Batteries program has now helped 200,000 households, small businesses and community organisations install a bill busting battery, with 50,000 homes also installing solar for the first time.

Cheaper home batteries are being installed at record rates right across the country, with the scheme proving the most popular in outer suburban and regional electorates such as Wright in Queensland, Indi in Victoria and Page in New South Wales.

Since the program commenced, around 4.7GWhs of battery storage capacity has been installed, doubling Australia's battery capacity. An expansion of the program in December has seen the number of home batteries expected to be installed climb to 2 million by 2030.

This additional storage is helping households store more of their own cheap, clean solar energy for use at night and during periods of high demand - crucial during summer months to power ACs while keeping the grid stable.

Australia is already a world leader in rooftop solar, and cheaper home batteries are ensuring households can get even more bang for their buck from the energy they generate.

Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said the milestone showed Australians were embracing renewable energy as coal becomes increasingly expensive and unreliable.

"Two hundred thousand cheaper home batteries means more Australians are taking control of their power bills and using their own clean, cheap energy when they need it," Minister Bowen said.

"Cheaper Home Batteries deliver real, lasting cost of living relief for Aussie households, while working to make the energy grid fairer and more reliable during peak demand times."
