2022 Post-enumeration Survey field test

To prepare for the 2023 Post-enumeration Survey, a field test of the planned data collection approach will be conducted from 16 May to 3 June 2022, Stats NZ said today.

Stats NZ conducts a Post-enumeration Survey after every census. It's an independent check of the census count, to check how many people might have been missed or counted twice in the census.

It is an important assurance check, because the accuracy of census data informs decisions that affect the future of all people in Aotearoa New Zealand.

In the 2022 Post-enumeration Survey field test we will be testing two collection methods:

  • face-to-face interviews on the doorstep with approximately 300 households
  • 200 households will be invited to participate in a telephone interview to help test our COVID-19 contingency plans.

The field test will be held in areas that are a subset of the 2022 census test areas, highlighted on the map below.

We randomly select households to speak to, and if your household is in the test area, you may be selected to participate. Participation in the test is important, because it helps us prepare for the 2023 Post-enumeration Survey.

Being involved in the field test is voluntary. The survey takes less than 10 minutes for most people, because we only ask a few quick questions to check if people were counted in the 2022 census test (recently conducted between February and April 2022).

The information collected in the field test is kept secure by Stats NZ. It is protected under the Statistics Act 1975 and the Privacy Act 2020.

Stats NZ staff conducting the survey will be in Stats NZ branded clothing and have photo identification cards with a Certificate of Authority.

The safety of our communities and staff is a priority. Additional COVID-19 measures have been put in place to help keep staff and the public safe when the collection specialists are in the community. This includes training for staff working under the COVID-19 Protection Framework (traffic light system) and the use of provided protective equipment.

We will publish the key findings of the field test publicly once we have finished evaluating the findings.
