24 Charged as Cairns Flying Squad Begins Patrol

Far North Police supported by officers from the State Flying Squad have charged 24 people with 59 offences on the first day of a week-long deployment.

Between April 30 and May 6, the high-visibility operation will see specialist police from the southeast deployed to support local officers in targeting high-risk domestic and family violence offenders, property crime, road safety and anti-social behaviour.

On April 30 around 10am, officers were conducting proactive patrols when they allegedly observed a group of young people acting suspiciously while exiting a home on Cooktown Road in Edmonton.

It is alleged the group then ran from police.

A 15-year-old Edmonton boy was charged with two counts of enter premises and commit indictable offence by break, one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, fraud -dishonestly make off without paying, obstruct police officer, trespass and breach of bail.

A 16-year-old Edmonton boy was charged with one count each of threatening violence - discharge firearms or other act, attempted stealing, trespass - unlawfully enter or remain in dwelling or yard and breach of bail.

Both boys are due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on May 7.

Around 2pm, police were called Wiseman Drive following reports of a disturbance at a home.

It will be alleged two teenage boys entered the home and demanded keys from the owners, before one of the boys assaulted the male occupant and fled on foot.

At 2.20pm, police located one of the boys allegedly hiding in a nearby bush.

Police allege the boy was one of the group who fled from police earlier.

The 14-year-old Parramatta Park boy was charged with three counts each of enter dwelling and commit, possess by day instrument of house breaking with intent, breach of bail two counts of armed robbery, one count each of attempted enter dwelling with intent, attempted enter dwelling and commit, trespass.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in the Cairns Childrens Court today, May 1.

Investigations are continuing.
