30 Km/h Speed Limit Trial Underway Across Stonnington

We're trialling a 30 km/h speed limit in 12 local areas across Stonnington for 18 months.

Streets across Malvern, Prahran, Toorak and South Yarra, Armadale, Windsor, Malvern and Glen Iris will have 30km/h limits from Monday 19 October 2026 to Sunday 23 April 2028. You can view the selected streets on our website.

The trial areas have been chosen because they're near schools, shopping areas and key bike routes where there are more vulnerable road users, including children and pedestrians.

Why we're trialling lower speed limits

When people are travelling in different ways, unexpected moments can happen quickly - someone crossing the road, a bike rider entering a driveway or a vehicle turning a corner.

Lower speeds give drivers more time to react and can reduce the severity of a crash. Research shows that when a vehicle hits a person walking, their chance of survival is around 90% at 30 km/h, compared with around 10% at 50 km/h.

The purpose of the trial is to measure how lower speed limits affect safety, travel times, congestion and the way people use local streets in a real-world setting.

How we'll evaluate the trial

Over the 18 months, we'll monitor traffic speeds and the number of vehicles, bike riders and pedestrians using the streets. Community feedback will also help us understand people's experiences throughout the trial.

Together, this information will help guide future decisions about local street safety.
