40th Anniversary of Shoalhaven City

Shoalhaven City Council held a special morning tea to celebrate 40 years of being proclaimed a city with former senior staff and councillors at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre on Thursday, 1 August.

The morning tea heard from keynote speakers such as Shoalhaven City's longest-serving Councilor, Councillor Greg Watson. Clr Watson was the first Mayor of Shoalhaven City Council and led the Council through the significant change in 1979.

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Amanda Findley said it was great to see Councillors and Mayors, past and present together to celebrate a significant milestone.

"It was a long road for the region to be declared the city as we know it today. In 1948 the seven Shires and Councils that covered the Shoalhaven District came together to form the Shoalhaven Shire," Clr Findley said.

"Thirty years later the Shoalhaven Shire sought approval from the Government to be proclaimed a City, the proclamation was received in August 1979.

"The Shoalhaven has come a long way in 40 years as we now look forward to; further sustainable policy development, to ensure we have a way to pay for investments into renewable energy in the future. Also, our new Tech-One system, which will make sure our workforce can act as efficiently as possible."

"We are dedicated to improving infrastructure to cater for future generations. Later this year the state of the art Indoor Sports Hub will open to the public, not to mention Australia's first Advanced Waste Treatment plant which will be completed in 2021." Clr Findley stated.

The morning tea also included a trip down memory lane with a historical display of archived documents, news articles and artefacts such as stamps and coins dating back to 1948.
