495 Express Lanes Northern Extension Now Open

The 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension is has officially opened to traffic, delivering new travel choices and helping to ease congestion for commuters in Northern Virginia.

The project, which extends the 495 Express Lanes by 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) north towards the Maryland border, offers drivers faster and more predictable travel options, and is set to improve travel times through one of the most heavily-congested roadways in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Importantly, the project also improves liveability in surrounding communities by reducing impacts on local roads.

Ahead of the project opening, Transurban team members joined Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) leaders and regional elected officials to celebrate this important milestone and recognise how the project improves connectivity to key economic hubs, including Tysons and the Dulles Corridor.

The success of Project NEXT is testament to our decade-long partnership with our government partner VDOT, whose collaboration has been critical to delivering safer, smarter and more reliable journeys for the region.
