The Marshall Liberal Government will deliver $51 million in the 2019-20 State Budget to bust congestion and keep traffic flowing on Main North and Grand Junction Roads.
The $51 million investment allows for three intersection upgrades;
- $19 million to upgrade the intersection of Main North Road and Nottage Terrace;
- $13 million to upgrade the intersection of Main North, Kings and McIntyre Roads; and,
- $19 million to upgrade the intersection of Grand Junction, Hampstead and Briens Roads.
"The Marshall Government is continuing to deliver massive infrastructure investment to bust congestion, reduce travel times and make our roads safer," said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll.
"These are some of the most congested intersections in Adelaide northern suburbs accommodating between 58,000 and 78,000 vehicles per day and nearing operational capacity.
"Aside from being major arterial roads for the public, they are also key routes for freight traveling through to the north of the city.
"We're investing $51 million in the next State Budget, in partnership with the Commonwealth Government, to build these intersections, so that South Australians spend less time stuck in traffic and have a faster and safer journey into work or home.
"The Marshall Government is continuing to build the infrastructure we need to support the population growth we want to achieve in South Australia.
"Scotty's corner is one of the most notorious intersections north of the city and is in desperate need of an upgrade.
"We'll be looking to add an additional right-hand turn lane to increase the capacity for commuters to turn right onto Nottage Terrace, as well as extend the bus lane to help through traffic.
"This $51 million investment builds on the over $200 million of other intersection upgrades we've already announced along Cross Road, Goodwood Road and Portrush Road."
The intersection of Main North Road and Nottage Terrace carries approximately 66,000 vehicles per day and experiences congestion in peak periods, particularly for right hand turns from Main North Road into Nottage Terrace.
It is proposed to add an additional right-hand turn lane on Main North Road and extend the existing bus lane on the northern approach on Main North Road.
Main North, Kings and McIntyre Roads is a vital freight, major traffic and public transport route, with approximately 78,000 motorists travelling through this intersection every day.
Extending or adding right hand turn lanes may be an option to improve safety and efficiency.
The intersection of Grand Junction, Hampstead and Briens Roads has been forecasted to be at operational capacity by 2021.
With 58,000 vehicles per day travelling through currently, it demonstrates a need for additional capacity on all approaches to the intersection before the volume increases.
Early planning works will commence immediately in order to determine the preferred option for each intersection with early works expected to commence in the 2019-20 financial year.
The Australian Government has committed 50 percent towards upgrading these priority intersections.
