55-year-old woman charged with string of offences across Darwin

A 55-year-old Wulagi woman was arrested yesterday and charged with a number of offences after a complex investigation.

Officers from Darwin Frontline Support Unit commenced an investigation into the woman when a gentleman suffering from cancer was allegedly defrauded $8500 by the woman who sold him a vehicle that that did not belong to her, Northern Territory Police say.

Police are also investigating several other outstanding matters that had occurred throughout the greater Darwin region over the last several months relating to unlawful entries, credit card and cheque fraud.

Multiple search warrants were executed at the woman’s residence on Thursday and as a result, officers located and seized numerous items relating to the offending including dangerous drugs. Also located at the residence were hundreds of items of allegedly stolen mail from approximately 150 persons around Darwin.

The woman was later charged with the following offences:

- Obtain Benefit By Deception – Four counts

- Aggravated Unlawful Entry – Building

- Aggravated Unlawful Entry - Dwelling (Occupied)

- Stealing – Two counts

- Criminal Damage

- Possess Schedule One Drug - Less Than Trafficable

- Possess Schedule Two Drug - Less Than Trafficable

- Possess Schedule Three Drug - Less Than Trafficable

"These charges are the result of an excellent job which saw officers working together on what turned out to be a complex investigation," Senior Sergeant Justene Dwyer said.

The offences relating to the mail theft remain under investigation due to the complex nature and sheer number of persons affected. Charges are expected to be laid in the future.

The woman was remanded and is scheduled to appear before the Darwin Local Court today.
