Greenslopes Private Hospital has unveiled a $72 million expansion project to move "into the future" and meet rising demand for its services.

In one of the largest redevelopments of the 78-year-old Brisbane site, there will be a new three-storey infill building plus another two-level facility with 64 private ensuite beds, while the emergency department will be refurbished.

"This work will take Greenslopes Private Hospital into the future with the ability to grow and maintain an environment which will provide a positive experience for all in our community," CEO Chris Went said of the plan, due to be completed in December 2021.

"There is currently a high demand for inpatient beds, and with both the expansion of the emergency department and the additional operating theatres, the new beds will allow us to service this increased capacity," she added.

The three-storey building will be located next to the existing administration area. The first level will include three new rooms for day surgery procedures, including plastic and cosmetic cases, plus a shell room for future expansion.

On level two, the intensive care unit will be expanded with two extra beds plus space for another five in future. There will be three new operating theatres on level three, taking the hospital's total to 22, plus room for another.

The emergency department refurbishment will include seven new bays to give patients more space and privacy, and there will also be an area for medical imaging services.
