84th Anniversary Of Bombing Of Darwin

NT Government

On 19 February 1942, Darwin became the frontline. In the first and largest foreign attack ever mounted on Australian soil, 242 Japanese aircraft launched two devastating air raids on our harbour, airfields and town.

Chief Minister and Minister for Defence NT Lia Finocchiaro said the anniversary is a time for reflection, remembrance and resolve.

"The Bombing of Darwin is a day to remember the courage and sacrifice of the service men and women and everyday Territorians who defended our beautiful city.

"It shattered the illusion that our island nation was beyond the reach of global conflict and brought the reality of war to our doorstep. Yet, for too long, the scale and significance of this attack were not fully understood across the country."

The Bombing of Darwin remains a defining moment in Australia's wartime history and a solemn reminder of the resilience of the Territory community.

"Today, we gather as a community to honour those who served, those who sacrificed, and those who continue to defend our nation.

"We remember the servicemen and women, the civilians, the harbour workers, the nurses, and the volunteers who showed extraordinary bravery in the face of chaos.

"The lessons of that day remind us of the cost of complacency, the value of preparedness, and the strength found in unity."

The events of 1942 also strengthened the enduring partnership between the Northern Territory and the United States.

For more than 80 years, our shared history and cooperation have formed an unbreakable bond, one forged in the defence of freedom and security in our region.

As commemorative services are held across the Territory, Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro encouraged all Territorians to pause and reflect.

"As we mark this solemn anniversary, we stand together in gratitude and respect.

Lest we forget."

To commemorate this historic event, memorial services will be held today:

USS Peary Memorial Service: 8.00am - 8.45am, at the USS Peary Memorial in Bicentennial Park.
